Rural natural resource management is under pressure because of government changes, changes to farming communities, changes in markets and environmental threats. Australia has to achieve: (1) significant improvement in the profitability of rural land-use, so we can afford both good incomes and environmental protection; (2) far greater effectiveness and efficiency in the conservation of natural systems and assets; and (3) significant improvement in how fairly the benefits and costs of land-use and conservation are shared. This paper should assist a National Landcare Network discussion of what Landcare might do directly, or as a catalyst, to meet these challenges.
