Evening With The Federal Environment Minister – Strengthening our Nature Laws

Aug 16, 2024

The Queensland Conservation Council held a webinar Thursday evening with National Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek joined by environmental leaders and other guests to discuss strengthening our nature laws.

The event was a valuable opportunity to hear directly from the Minister about what processes are evolving in reforming how we manage the impacts of industry and development on the environment across the country.

Conservation councils came together to host the event highlighting the urgency of strengthening nature laws at a critical time for environmental management in Australia. Examples of where stronger laws are needed included in areas such as land clearing and other industry practices that harm threatened communities, such as coal mines in koala habitats, and logging that kills gliders.

The discussion also focussed on the progress of the Nature Positive Reforms in relation to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, or EPBC.

Each state and territory has a conservation council – a member-based, non-government organisation which exists to represent nature and give it a voice. QCC are the bridge between the grassroots environment movement and government. The conservation councils have a long history of winning outcomes for nature. Whether it’s adding to the national parks estate, improving management of biodiversity, our precious rivers and wetlands or stopping destructive developments, the QCC work to make sure civil society has a voice in representing nature.
