Walking Together to Heal Country: NLN Inaugural First Nations Community of Practice

Oct 8, 2024

As part of the National Landcare Facilitator Program also known as the Strengthen Landcare – Deliver Nature Repair Program, the NLN held its inaugural First Nations Community of Practice (CoP) meeting a few weeks ago, via zoom.

The aim of the CoP is to exchange information and knowledge with First Nations people across Australia so we can learn how to walk together to heal Country. Fostering this two-way collaboration helps us to better connect, share and facilitate on-ground Landcare and NRM projects.

So far, our community of practice has representatives from the NLN Board, staff and the Landcare Enabling Program (LNSW) including Den Barber who is the Aboriginal Partnerships Manager, and two regional NSW roles, Michael Kennedy and Nioka Dupond.

The National Landcare Facilitator Program is funded until 2027 and will encompass four key roles, employed under this grant, including:

1. First Nations Landcare Facilitators x2 at .6 FTE or 3 days per week.
2. Volunteer Landcare Facilitator
3. National Landcare Facilitator First Nations Engagement

We are working closely with the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) and NLN Board Member Uncle John Chester (from South Australia) to assist in co-designing the First Nations roles. Our next meeting will be held Tuesday the 15th of October 1:00pm AEST.

If you would like to join the Community of Practice, please email melanie.tyas@nln.org.au.
