NLN Welcomes Senator Malarndirri McCarthy as the new Minister for Indigenous Australians

Aug 14, 2024

The NLN is pleased to welcome Senator Malarndirri McCarthy in her newly appointed role as Indigenous Australians Minister after the recent resignaton of former Minister Linda Burney.

Senator McCarthy, from the Gulf country in the Northern Territory, has been an exceptional advocate for First Nations people and communities for many years, with extensive experience in both Federal and Northern Territory politics, and in her former background as a Journalist including with ABC, SBS and NITV.

Senator McCarthy was first elected for Labor as one of the Northern Territory’s two senators in 2016 and was named assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians and Indigenous Health in 2022. Before entering federal politics, she spent several years serving in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly where she held the portfolios of local government, regional development, Indigenous development, tourism, women’s policy and statehood.

Senator McCarthy’s considerable experience in both Federal and Northern Territory politics and her comprehensive understanding of the issues which affect the lives of First Nations people places her in an ideal position to take on this new role. The NLN is looking forward to working with Senator McCarthy to help ensure that the rights and interests of First Nations people are recognised and that their long-standing knowledge and expertise in managing our natural resources is put at the forefront of community Landcare practices across Australia.
