SUMMARY:Mental health in times of climate chaos
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a thoughtful discussion on the mental health impacts of climate change – and how we can support one another and build resilience in the face of growing climate challenges. \n\nClimate change is putting serious strain on our mental health. Extreme weather events like bushfires\, floods\, and heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense\, affecting people across Australia and adding pressure to an already stretched health system. \n\nThe mental toll comes not only from direct impacts but also from ongoing worry about the future. Constant exposure to distressing news can cause anxiety\, grief\, and hopelessness. \n\nThese events can lead to serious mental health issues – notably for children and young people\, but also for anyone impacted by our changed climate – including anxiety\, depression\, PTSD\, and substance use. \n\nThis webinar will explore these complex issues and consider ways to care for our mental health – and each other – amid the growing realities of climate disruption.

SUMMARY:Fungi for Landcarers
DESCRIPTION:Landcarers know that healthy bushland is resilient due to the myriad of interactions between our animals\, fungi\, plants and microbes. The plethora of benefits fungi provide range from providing essential nutrients to plants\, environmental protection and restoration and  improved efficiency in agriculture. \nJoin the WALN Team and special guest\, Julie Fielder to discuss all things fungi. A mycologist who has worked with plants and fungi across Australia. Her personal passion is the soil mycobiome\, and its ecological relationships with plants and soil chemistry. \nJulie is an author of the first practical guide for integrating fungi into conservation and restoration for land managers\, Fungi4Land. This awesome project is being spearheaded by Dr Sapphire McMullan-Fisher and Roz Hart. Some of you may remember Roz did a fantastic presentation on their project at our annual gathering at the Wetlands Centre in 2024.

SUMMARY:Western Victoria Fires – threatened species case studies
DESCRIPTION:This ARI seminar looks at the recent Western Victoria bushfires with a biodiversity lens. \nUsing case studies of threatened species\, we will explore how biodiversity values are identified\, monitored\, and addressed during a bushfire event. Rather than providing a full overview of the Western fires\, it offers insights from three individuals involved in the biodiversity response. \n  \nFor this seminar\, we are lucky to have: \n\nDr Sarah Garnick (DEECA Biodiversity) sharing aspects of DEECA’s rapid risk assessment and her role in leading a small mammal prioritization workshop.\nDr David Cantrill (Royal Botanic Gardens) discussing the complex process of flora recovery from planning\, response to recovery through the case study of the Mt Cole Grevillea.\nMarcello Bold (Parks Victoria) enlightening us on the onground actions Parks Victoria led to support threatened species including supplementary habitat and monitoring programs.

SUMMARY:Forested ecosystems: Carbon sequestration and biodiversity impacts
DESCRIPTION:Forested ecosystems play a central role in global efforts to mitigate climate change and halt biodiversity loss due to their large carbon storage and sequestration potential and importance for biodiversity. However\, land use\, biodiversity loss and climate change are deeply interconnected and pose challenges that require integrated solutions. \nJoin us as our guest speaker presents insights and experiences from 11 studies focusing on evaluation and integration of carbon and greenhouse gas processes\, and biodiversity impacts mainly in boreal forested ecosystems. The spatial scale of the studies presented ranges from detailed site-specific to a European scale\, with a multi-disciplinary approach including integrated modelling and spatial prioritisation\, mass-balance studies (tracking a contaminant’s path from its source to its ultimate destination within an environmental system)\, Earth Observation techniques (a process of acquiring observations of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere via remote sensing instruments)\,  research infrastructure developments\, and evaluation of policy measures and economic compensation schemes. Several studies also take a landscape approach\, considering other ecosystems such as agricultural\, wetland and freshwater ecosystems\, as well as and greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic sources.
