A Tree Mendous Effort to Keep Sydney Cool

309,637 native trees and shrubs planted across Greater Sydney!

The amazing Creating Canopies 2020-2025 project has wrapped & WHAT AN ACHIEVEMENT!

With the help of more than 7,000 volunteers, 350 planting events, and 70+ landholders across 20 Local Government Areas throughout Greater Sydney, the Creating Canopies project overachieved its goal of planting 300,000 native trees and shrubs in previously under-utilised Sydney locations.

In addition to the 309,657 trees and shrubs planted, 41,400 grasses and groundcovers, primarily donated by partner councils, were planted between 2023-25.

Funded by the NSW Government through the Greening Our City initiative and delivered by Greater Sydney Landcare in partnership with Landcare NSW, Creating Canopies restored much-needed biodiversity, habitat, greenery, and cooler urban environments.

Summing it up best, Danielle Hughes the project manager of Creating Canopies at Greater Sydney Landcare said, “Thank you to everyone who participated, from the volunteers and community who gave their time and energy, to the landholders, councils, and partners who so generously opened their sites, shared their expertise, and contributed to the enormous success of Creating Canopies.”
