Walking Together, Cultural Knowledge and Conversation Toolkit

A message from NLN’s First Nations Liaison Officer

I’d like to share a great resource: Walking Together – Cultural Knowledge and Conservation Toolkit.

It was developed by North Coast Regional Landcare Network, in partnership with Aboriginal communities and organisations across the North Coast, to support Landcare groups to engage with First Nations people in respectful and meaningful ways.

It provides simple, practical information, including:

  • An overview of First Nations history since colonisation
  • information about First Nations peoples in Australia
  • guidance on cultural safety, protocols, and use of language and place names
  • information about Aboriginal organisations and governance
  • an overview of the current legal setting for Cultural Burning
  • guidance to support respectful engagement with Aboriginal people and organisations

It’s a strong example of place-based work happening across the Landcare network, and I encourage you to take a look and adapt to your local context.
