Moments That Matter – How Landcare Builds Connection and Wellbeing
This week marks both Loneliness Awareness Week (4–10 August) and Landcare Week — a timely reminder of the power of connection, community, and care. With new research showing that one in three Australians feel lonely, it’s more important than ever to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued.
The theme of Loneliness Awareness Week, “Moments Matter,” encourages us to reflect on how connection is built — not through grand gestures, but through small, meaningful interactions. A shared laugh, a group activity, or simply showing up can be the spark that helps someone feel they belong. Landcare offers exactly that.
More Than Environmental Action
Landcare is best known for its environmental work — restoring landscapes, protecting biodiversity, and promoting sustainable practices. But its impact reaches far beyond the land. Volunteering with Landcare has been shown to strengthen social ties, foster new friendships, and build a deep sense of belonging.
Whether you’re planting trees, attending a local workshop, or joining a clean-up day, Landcare provides a space where people of all ages and backgrounds come together with purpose. It’s a place where you’re not just contributing to the environment — you’re connecting with others, learning new skills, and improving your mental and physical wellbeing.
The Power of Belonging
Feeling part of a community is essential to our health. Social connection can reduce stress and anxiety, improve physical health, boost self-esteem, and create a sense of purpose. Landcare groups foster these outcomes by creating inclusive, welcoming environments where everyone has something to contribute.
From First Nations gatherings to youth summits and local field trips, Landcare is a movement that celebrates diversity, collaboration, and care. It’s community-led and community-driven — and that’s what makes it so powerful.
Get Involved
If you’ve ever felt disconnected or unsure of where to start, joining a Landcare group could be the beginning of something transformative. It’s a chance to make a difference — not just to the land, but to your own wellbeing and the lives of those around you.
