Connecting with Nature and Community for Wellbeing
World Mental Health Day on 10 October is a timely reminder of the importance of looking after our mental wellbeing. This year’s theme from Mental Health Australia, “Connect with your community,” couldn’t be more relevant to those involved in Landcare. Across Australia, Landcare groups are not just restoring environments—they’re also fostering healthier, happier minds.
Landcare: A Pathway to Connection and Wellbeing
Whether you’re planting trees, pulling weeds, or lending a hand in a local community garden, Landcare brings people together in the great outdoors. The benefits of these activities go far beyond environmental impact. Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood, while working alongside others helps build new friendships and a powerful sense of belonging.
Many Landcarers find a renewed sense of purpose in their work—knowing their efforts are making a difference to the land, wildlife, and their neighbours. This connection to both place and people is a proven lifeline for strong mental health, helping us feel grounded and valued in our communities.
